Planning a family trip or day out and not sure if an AJ Hackett activity is an option? You’ve come to the right place to find out with our guide to age and weight rules.
Every AJ Hackett activity has a minimum age, and every activity requires a parent or guardian’s signed consent for anyone under 15. Here’s what that means for your family, broken down by the questions parents actually ask before they book.
What’s the youngest age for any AJ Hackett activity?
The youngest age for any AJ Hackett activity is seven. The Auckland Bridge Climb has the lowest minimum age across all three sites. Under-15s still need signed consent, and for climbers under 10 specifically, an adult is recommended on the climb itself, not just on site.
Can an 8 or 9 year old bungy jump or do the swing?
An 8-year-old or 9-year-old cannot do a bungy jump, but two other activities open at 8: the Kawarau Swing in Queenstown, and the Zipride, also in Queenstown. On the Zipride, riders aged 8 and 9 have to go tandem with an adult aged 20 or over.
What’s the minimum age for an actual bungy jump?
The minimum age for a bungy jump is ten. That’s the age for the Kawarau Bridge Bungy and the Ledge Bungy in Queenstown, the bungy in Taupō, and the Auckland bridge bungy, and it’s a big part of why a tenth birthday has become a popular time for a first jump among New Zealand families.
Is there an AJ Hackett activity with a higher age limit?
Yes. The Nevis Bungy and Nevis Catapult, both in Queenstown, require jumpers to be at least 13. The Nevis Swing has a lower threshold and opens at 10.
Does my under-15 need me there, or just my permission?
Every activity requires a parent or guardian’s consent for anyone under 15, company-wide. A number of activities go a step further: the Auckland and Taupō activities recommend an adult be present on site, as do the Nevis Bungy, Nevis Swing and Nevis Catapult, and the Ledge Bungy and Ledge Swing require it outright for anyone 14 or under.
BRIDGE CLIMB AGE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum 7 years old. Under 15 requires adult consent at check-in. Under 10 is recommended to have an adult accompany them on their experience (relevant activity charges may apply for the adult).
SKYRIDE / SKYWALK / SKYJUMP
At SkyCity, children cannot go unaccompanied on site so while we can take a 10 year old on the SkyWalk, the parents need to be present on site and the child will stay with the guide until the parents collect them/or we drop them off.
Is there a weight limit for bungy jumping and swinging?
Yes, there is a weight limit for bungy jumping and swinging. Every activity has one, since it’s what decides whether the harness fits safely rather than a fitness test. Minimums start around 30–35kg on most activities, though the Nevis Bungy and Nevis Catapult sit higher at 45kg. Maximums vary more by site: solo limits run up to 160kg on the Nevis Swing, and tandem or group limits go up to 240kg on the Kawarau Swing. For an actual bungy jump, the Kawarau Bridge Bungy takes solo jumpers up to 150kg and tandem pairs up to a combined 235kg.
Auckland Bungy: minimum weight: 35kgs, Maximum weight: 150kgs.
Full ranges for every activity are in the table below.
What if two people go tandem and one weighs a lot more than the other?
For tandem bungy jumps, the maximum weight difference allowed between the two participants is 30kg, and the combined weight still needs to fall within that activity’s tandem limit. The crew confirm final suitability on the day.
For the Nevis Swing and Kawarau Swing, any weight difference between participants is fine, however a significant difference may determine the style of Swing you need to do.
Auckland Bungy: total weight limit 150kgs
SkyJump and SkyRide: single person maximum 150kgs.
Tandem combined weight 235kgs.
Is there a minimum height for any activity?
There is not generally a minimum height for any activity. Weight and build are what matter, since that’s what determines a secure fit in the harness or safety system, and there’s no across-the-board height limit. The one exception is SkyWalk in Auckland, which has a minimum height of 1.3m.
What can we do together as a family with a mixed-age group?
If you would like to select an activity together as a family with a mixed-age group then match the activity to your youngest first. A 7 or 8 year old can join in on the Bridge Climb, Kawarau Swing or Zipride while older siblings take on a bungy jump; once everyone is 10 or over, the full Queenstown, Taupō and Auckland line-up (aside from Nevis Bungy and Nevis Catapult) opens up together.
